24 Μαρ 2021 · Learning Objectives. Define and give examples of electrolytes. Use the solubility rules to predict if a compound is soluble, insoluble, or slightly soluble. When some substances are dissolved in water, they undergo either a physical or a chemical change that yields ions in solution.
The extent of solubility ranges widely, from infinitely soluble (without limit, i.e. miscible [2]) such as ethanol in water, to essentially insoluble, such as titanium dioxide in water. A number of other descriptive terms are also used to qualify the extent of solubility for a given application.
Water is the most widely used solvent due to its excellent properties. It is a polar compound capable of forming hydrogen bonds and dissolving several molecules. Solubility is measured in units of grams per liter (g/L). For example, the solubility of table salt in water at 25 ˚C is 360 g/L.
A salt is soluble if it dissolves in water to give a solution with a concentration of at least 0.1 moles per liter at room temperature. A salt is insoluble if the concentration of an aqueous solution is less than 0.001 M at room temperature.

But, solubility is not an all-or-nothing process. Many chemicals are slightly soluble, meaning they don’t completely dissolve, but they partially dissociate into their ions.
