In Sonic Battle, each character possesses a unique set of skills which they can use throughout the game. Emerl, however, possesses the unique ability to copy skills from the opponents he fights, and incorporate them into his moveset, at the cost of Skill Points.

The main gameplay of Battle is set in pseudo-3D environments. There are ten playable characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Rouge, Amy, Cream, Shadow, Emerl, Chaos Gamma, and Chaos. All characters share basic fighting maneuvers, including punching combos, healing, blocking, and special attacks.
