The Special Olympics World Games, also known as Special Olympiad, are an international sporting event for participants with intellectual disabilities, organized by the IOC-recognised Special Olympics organization.
Major Special Olympics competitions are held around the world each year to bring together athletes contending to be the best in their sports. In 2019, the United Arab Emirates hosted the first World Games in the Middle East in Abu Dhabi. The next World Games will be in Berlin, Germany in 2023.
International participation expanded in subsequent games. In 2003, the first summer games held outside the United States were in Dublin, Ireland, with 7000 athletes from 150 countries. The most recent Summer Games were hosted in Berlin, Germany, between June 16 to 25, 2023. [4]
March 2011: The Special Olympics movement is growing all the time, and in Astana, Kazakhstan, there was an exciting milestone. The country's first national Special Olympics winter games drew 250 athletes with intellectual disabilities to compete in skiing, skating and floorball.
26 Ιαν 2022 · Over four days before the start of the World Games, 216 towns from across Germany will host Special Olympics athletes, their families and international delegations. Each host town will highlight what their individual community has to offer over the course of the four-day stay.
