Special relativity corrects the hitherto laws of mechanics to handle situations involving all motions and especially those at a speed close to that of light (known as relativistic velocities). Today, special relativity is proven to be the most accurate model of motion at any speed when gravitational and quantum effects are negligible.
As an introduction, special relativity is the study of high velocities, those close to the speed of light. Special relativity is based on two fundamental principles; the constancy of the speed of light and the universality of the laws of physics, which lead to the ideas of spacetime and 4-vectors.
1 Φεβ 2022 · Learn how Einstein explained how speed affects mass, time and space, and how he derived the famous equation E = mc^2. Explore the history, implications and examples of special relativity, and how it differs from general relativity.
18 Σεπ 2024 · Special relativity revealed that the speed of light is a limit that can be approached but not reached by any material object. It is the origin of the most famous equation in science, E = mc2, which expresses the fact that mass and energy are the same physical entity and can be changed into each other.
Learn the basics of special relativity, the theory that changed our view of space and time, from Prof. Markus Klute. Explore topics such as length contraction, time dilation, Lorentz transformation, and more through lectures, problem sets, and exams.
26 Ιαν 2017 · Special relativity is a “special case” of general relativity. The combination of these two principles helps explain many subjects varying from the motion of the planets and the effect of...
Learn how Einstein's theory of special relativity revolutionised our ideas of space and time, and how light's speed limit affects them. Find out the consequences of special relativity for clocks, rulers, mass and energy.
