30 Οκτ 2023 · The cranial accessory nerve has a similar function to the vagus nerve. It carries motor innervation to the pharyngeal constrictors, larynx, and muscles of the soft palate (except tensor veli palatini). The spinal accessory nerve is a purely motor entity. It innervates both the trapezius and the sternocleidomastoid muscles.
12 Οκτ 2023 · The spinal accessory nerve innervates two muscles – the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius. Sternocleidomastoid Attachments – Runs from the mastoid process of the temporal bone to the manubrium (sternal head) and the medial third of the clavicle (clavicular head).
The spinal accessory nerve is notable for being the only cranial nerve to both enter and exit the skull. This is due to it being unique among the cranial nerves in having neurons in the spinal cord. [9] After leaving the skull, the cranial component detaches from the spinal component.
17 Ιουλ 2023 · The spinal portion of the accessory nerve also innervates important muscles. Without a functional SCM and trapezius, the movement of your upper body would be severely limited. The sternocleidomastoid muscle is essential for neck movement.
The spinal accessory nerve, considered part of the eleventh cranial nerve, provides motor innervation to sternocleidomastoid and trapezius. A comprehensive literature review and two cadaveric dissections were undertaken. The spinal accessory nerve originates from the spinal accessory nucleus.
The smaller cranial part arises from cells in the nucleus ambiguus and ultimately is distributed with the vagus nerve. This portion innervates the pharyngeal muscles. The main part, the spinal portion, arises from a long column of nuclei situated in the ventral part of the medulla and extending to the fifth cervical segment or lower.
16 Απρ 2018 · The accessory nerve (Fig. 1), named after Thomas Willis (Willis, 1965) cranial nerve XI, innervates the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and trapezius muscles.
