Our History. The site of the Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis, King of France, has been the center of worship for the Catholic faithful in New Orleans and a major civic gathering place since the founding of our city in 1718. The first permanent church, built in 1727, was burned in the fire of 1788.
Facing Jackson Square and flanked by the historic Cabildo on one side and the equally historic Presbytere on the other, St. Louis Cathedral is among the tallest and most imposing structures in the French Quarter.
