Coal is expected to trade at 146.28 USD/MT by the end of this quarter, according to Trading Economics global macro models and analysts expectations. Looking forward, we estimate it to trade at 153.20 in 12 months time.
The reference price for this determination is the Bohai-Rim Steam Coal Price Index (BSPI), a gauge of coal prices in northern China’s major ports. The price level aims to ensure sufficient profitability for domestic coal producers and customers.

Prices. The met and thermal coal price relationship shows a return to normal conditions. During the energy crisis in 2022, thermal coal traded at much higher prices than ever before, pushed by tight fundamentals, very high prices of the main competing fuel (natural gas), and a war premium.
After falling in 2020, spot prices for thermal coal rebounded throughout 2021. They spiked in the second half of 2021, as supply was unable to ramp up quickly enough to meet the first-half’s big jump in demand, particularly in China. Higher natural gas prices drove coal prices up further.
The API 2 price assessment is the benchmark price reference for coal imported to northwest Europe. It is calculated as an average of the Argus cif ARA price assessment and the IHS McCloskey NW Europe Steam Coal marker.
