Some municipal courts are courts of record—appeals from the courts are taken on the record to the county-level courts. As of May 2023, 205 courts indicated that they were a court of record; a list is posted at http://www.txcourts.gov/about-texas-courts.aspx.
Local Trial Courts of Limited Jurisdiction. 13 district courts are designated criminal district courts; some Sentences. others are directed to give preference to certain specialized areas. 379 districts containing one county and 97 districts containing more than one county.
In Texas, there are four federal district courts, a state supreme court, a state court of appeals, and trial courts with both general and limited jurisdiction. These courts serve different purposes, which are outlined in the sections below.
The basic structure of the present court system of Texas was established by an 1891 amendment to the Texas Constitution of 1876. The amendment established the Supreme Court as the highest state appellate court for civil maters, and the Court of Criminal Appeals as the highest state appellate court in criminal maters.
