Quercus buckleyi, commonly known as Texas red oak, Buckley's oak, or Spanish oak[4][5] is a species of flowering plant. [6][7] It is endemic to the southern Great Plains of the United States (Oklahoma and Texas). [8]
Texas Red Oak. Texas Red Oak is a medium size decidous tree that is a western counterpart to the Shumard Oak. Texas Red Oaks have smaller leaves and are smaller trees than Shumard Oaks, but are generally more drought and high pH soil tolerant. This is a handsome shade, park and street tree for Central and West Texas.
Texas Red Oak is a medium to small tree with spreading branches, sometimes (rarely) growing over 75 feet, but usually 30 to 50 feet. It is found on alkaline limestone and neutral to slightly acid gravels and sands of north central and central Texas west to the Pecos River.
The spread of oak wilt disease in Central Texas can often be linked to the movement of firewood from infected red oaks. These trees produce "fungal mats" under the bark where certain insects feed; it is these insects that can infect new trees where the firewood has been moved.
A superior shade tree known for its red to orange late fall foliage. Will adapt to a range of soils, but its native habitat is associated with limestone ridges, slopes, and creek bottoms. Alternative: Shumard Oak but only in well-drained soil.
