It's more likely to be -tion if the word's related to another one that ends in -t or -tain, e.g. assertion (from assert) or retention (from retain). Here are some more examples: exertion; distortion; abstention; invention. Words ending in -cion
So basically, what you say is: This construction comes from supine verbs in Latin, but when it comes to non-supine verbs, you haven't the foggiest why people sometimes add -a, and at other times just -tion. Doesn't seem like it much answers the OP's question, to me. –
11 Οκτ 2015 · Of course, the "rule" I outlined does not apply to all words that just end in the letters "tion" in English: the most notable counterexample is the word cation. However, I can't think of any counterexamples to my rule when dealing with the actual suffix -tion.

According to an answer by user Kosmonaut to a question "What rules of English allow the first t in “patient” to make an sh sound?": The reason something pronounced [ʃ] ("sh") would ever get the spelling "ti" is because of palatalization.

21 Φεβ 2015 · Usually -tion words, such as motion, education, and lotion, end with a -shn sound. But equation ends with a sound rhyming with vision. Are there many more? What might some of them be? And if the pronunciation of equation is a rarity for words ending in -tion, why did that pronunciation for it arise?
17 Μαρ 2019 · Can someone explain the rationale of adding TION to a verb. In other words, when I take a verb such as LIMIT and turn it into a noun I can make it limit, limiting, or limitation. The word Limitation means something a little different than limit or limiting. IS there a rule or explanation about this applies to all or at least most cases?
