Alexis Charles Henri Clérel, comte de Tocqueville[ a ] (29 July 1805 – 16 April 1859), [ 7 ] was a French aristocrat, diplomat, sociologist, political scientist, political philosopher, and historian. He is best known for his works Democracy in America (appearing in two volumes, 1835 and 1840) and The Old Regime and the Revolution (1856).

Alexis de Tocqueville was a 19th-century French historian, famous for his claim that the world will more readily accept a “simple lie” than a “complex truth”. Writing in The Ancien Regime and the French Revolution (1856), Tocqueville adopted a liberal-conservative line, not dissimilar to Simon Schama some 130 years later.
Biographie. Né à Paris, le 29 juillet 1805. Avocat, publiciste et magistrat, il obtint en 1835 un prix Montyon pour son livre La Démocratie en Amérique ; député de 1839 à 1851, il fut ministre des Affaires étrangères en 1849, et fut incarcéré pendant quelques jours au Coup d’État de 1851.
