The town of Union retains much of its historic architecture, with many structures dating to the antebellum period when the local economy was thriving from the resort industry. The present Monroe County Courthouse, built in 1881, displays the fashionable Romanesque style of the late-19th century.

7 Ιουν 2020 · It was built by Hugh Caperton sometime during the 1830s. His son, Allen, the first Confederate elected to the U.S. Senate after the Civil War, also made it his home. In 1864, some 10,000 Union troops, under the command of Gen. George Crook occuppied Union for five days.
History of Union, West Virginia. In 1799, shortly after Monroe County was created, James Alexander offered 25 acres of land, including a lot for a courthouse, which in time became the town of Union. In 1800, the Virginia Assembly passed an act creating the town of Union.

On May 22, 1862, Confederate General Henry Heth marched through Union toward Lewisburg, where he lost a battle the next morning. Between 30 and 40 “sick and exhausted” soldiers were left in Union, and the townspeople cared for them at the Academy, the Courthouse and a church.
It was founded in 1973 with the aim of preserving and promoting the history and heritage of Monroe County and its surrounding areas. The society operates out of a restored historic building on Main Street in Union, which serves as a local history museum and research center.
