20 Απρ 2024 · If you‘ve been a Verizon Wireless customer for a while, especially in the days of 3G devices, you may have dialed 228 on occasion to update your phone‘s Preferred Roaming List, or PRL. But what exactly is 228, how does it work, and is it still relevant today?
If your phone is 3G and does not have a SIM card, you can easily update your towers by dialing *228 and choosing option 2. However, if your phone is 4G and has a SIM card, updating your roaming towers in this way can do more damage than good to your SIM card.

Only our 3G capable phones would need to dial *228 (send) option 1 to activate, or 2 to update roaming capabilities. 4G phones, however, do not need to do this option and auto update based on the sim card and power cycling the phone.
Updating Verizon towers can resolve network errors and improve connectivity. For older 3G phones without a SIM card, dialing *228 and selecting option 2 updates the towers. For 4G LTE devices, the PRL is updated by switching off the phone and removing/reinserting the SIM card monthly.
