Fishing and the exploitation of marine resources were important economic activities for coastal communities in the Viking Age. But what fishing techniques and equipment were used?
15 Ιουλ 2023 · For the majority of the Viking Age (c. 750 – 1100 CE), fishing techniques remained the same as they had been since the advent of the Nordic Bronze Age (c. 1750 BCE to 500 BCE). Fishing weirs, traps, nets, and even wheels were used to catch fish in coastal areas and rivers.

Eels can be caught by almost every method known to fishing, nets, lines, traps and spears. The method used is dictated by the time of year. Nets can be used to catch young eels moving upstream in spring whereas wicker traps are used in autumn to catch large eels going down river back to the sea.
Much of the evidence for the consumption of fish has come from both toilet pits and soil excavations of archæological sites from the period. There is also a wealth of evidence, through manuscripts, carvings and 'fishing' artefacts, to establish the fact that fishing took place.
