Volcanoes are formed by the movement of tectonic plates. The Earth's crust has 17 major, rigid tectonic plates. These float on a hotter, softer layer in its mantle.
Magma, a mixture of hot, molten rock and gas, builds up deep beneath the surface of the Earth under enormous pressure. The magma rises, looking for weaknesses through rocks in the Earth’s crust.
During a volcanic eruption, hot melted rock called magma escapes from a vent, or opening, in Earth’s surface, or crust. Magma released from a volcano is known as lava. Fresh lava ranges from 1,300 to 2,200 °F (700 to 1,200 ° C) in temperature. It glows red as it flows out of the volcano’s opening.

Magma is formed when temperatures within Earth’s crust or mantle are very hot and when pressure in places within those layers decreases. When a volcano erupts or a deep crack occurs in the Earth, the magma rises and overflows.
