War Horse is a book about honoring war veterans, and Joey is a war veteran just like the human soldiers he served alongside. We have no idea why Maisie is stingy with her scones, or why Morpurgo decides to close the novel with this bittersweet moment.

When the war begins, Albert is forced to part with his beloved horse, who is “drafted” to the calvalry. There, Albert makes a solemn promise that he WILL see Joey again someday, since at that point he is too young to enlist and therefore go with him.
On the outbreak of the First World War, Albert's beloved horse 'Joey' is sold to the Cavalry by his Father. After being sent to France, in a bid to survive, Joey has an unexpected journey across war torn Europe. Albert enlists in the British Army, and is wounded during the Battle of the Somme.
