Teraina (written also Teeraina, [1] also known as Washington Island – these two names are constitutional [2]) is a coral atoll in the central Pacific Ocean and part of the Northern Line Islands which belong to Kiribati. Obsolete names of Teraina are New Marquesas, Prospect Island, and New York Island.

Washington Island is the largest in a chain of islands (which are collectively referred to as the Potawatomi Islands) extending across Lake Michigan between the Door Peninsula in Wisconsin and the Garden Peninsula in Delta County, Michigan. These islands are outcroppings of the Niagara Escarpment.
