John 19:34 records that a spear pierced Jesus' side and blood and water flowed out. This was a sign of His death and a fulfillment of Scripture. Learn how this happened and what it means for Jesus' crucifixion.
We have to think of the disciple whom Jesus loved looking at the crucified and pierced body of his Lord, and remembering the picture in later years, and telling that there flowed from that pierced side both blood and water.
The piercing of Christ side and the flow of blood and water (John 19:34) are unique to John’s gospel and it’s clear from the testimony which follows it ( 19:35) the author sees in them a real significance. Three times he swears to these events.
At its most basic 1 John 5:6 operates as a counter claim to those who hold that Jesus Christ came in water but not in blood. John holds that Jesus Christ came by both water and blood. A counter group appears to believe He came only in water.
