24 Νοε 2021 · What is dram and how is it relevant to shotgun shooters today? We'll explain and include a 12 gauge dram equivalent chart. Back in the old days, shooters didn't load shotshells with clean-burning, smokeless propellant.
The term “dram equivalent” is a holdover from the days when shotshells were loaded with blackpowder. Blackpowder is (or at least was) measured in “drams.” This is a weight measure, where 16 drams equal one ounce.
28 Ιουλ 2023 · Dram is an archaic unit of measurement used in shotgun ammunition to indicate the powder charge’s volume. It was originally derived from the old black powder days when black powder was the standard propellant for firearms.
A shotgun cartridge, shotshell, or shell is a type of rimmed, cylindrical (straight-walled) ammunition used specifically in shotguns. It is typically loaded with numerous small, spherical sub-projectiles called shot. Shotguns typically use a smoothbore barrel with a tapered constriction at the muzzle to regulate the extent of scattering.
Lets be clear here: dram equivalents should only be used for a general comparison between two different shotgun loads. Furthermore, smokeless powder is considerably more powerful than black powder and you should NEVER reload shotgun shells using “drams” or “dram equivalents” of smokeless powder.
7 Φεβ 2017 · Here’s how you figure dram equivalency: In 12 gauge, a standard 3 dram load with 1-1/8 oz of shot travels 1200 fps. Each 1/4 dram equivalent that you add increases velocity 55 fps. Each 1/8 oz of shot that you add subtracts 35 fps.
27 Ιαν 2018 · This stands for Dram Equivalent. The first shotshells were loaded with black powder. Black powder volume was originally measured in “drams.” When companies switched from black powder to smokeless powder, they placed the Dram Equivalent on the box to give the shooter an indication of shot velocity.
