I am going through an agonizing re-install, on day three now of Windows Updates, VS Service Packs, etc. It's been tough having to download all this again on a 384kbps ADSL line.
All of the Windows XP updates released prior to April 8, 2014, are available through Windows Update -- once service pack 3 has been installed (Windows Update will not work for XP pre-sp3). Service Pack 3 can only be installed AFTER you have installed service pack 1, service pack 1a, OR service pack 2.

I think this will give the download process higher priority. By default the BITS will only download an update when the network connection is not busy.

It depends on what hardware you have, what software you have installed, what updates are already installed, etc. The only entity that can properly tell you what updates you need is Windows Update.

Temporarily turn off updates: check 'Turn off Automatic Updates.' -> Apply. Turn them back on: check 'Automatic' tab (or whichever option you normally use) -> Apply.

16 Μαΐ 2016 · Microsoft recommended that XP users use "Windows Easy Transfer" to move "files and settings" from an XP computer to a Windows 7 computer. In my opinion, it's safer and more reliable simply to copy the data you want to keep to an external device (typically, an external hard drive) and then copy it back after the installation has been completed.
