In Roman Catholicism he is formally recognized as a doctor of the church.
Editions of St. Augustine's works. The best edition of his complete works is that of the Benedictines, eleven tomes in eight folio volumes (Paris, 1679-1700). It has been often reprinted, e.g. by Gaume (Paris, 1836-39), in eleven octavo volumes, and by Migne, PL 32-47.

His many important works include The City of God, On Christian Doctrine, and Confessions. According to his contemporary, Jerome of Stridon, Augustine "established anew the ancient Faith". [a] In his youth he was drawn to the Manichaean faith, and later to the Hellenistic philosophy of Neoplatonism.

His best-known works include the Confessions, an autobiographical meditation on God’s grace, and The City of God, on the nature of human society and the place of Christianity in history. His theological works On Christian Doctrine and On the Trinity are also widely read.
