The 1974 Super Outbreak was the second-largest tornado outbreak on record for a single 24-hour period, just behind the 2011 Super Outbreak. It was also the most violent tornado outbreak ever recorded, with 30 violent (F4 or F5 rated) tornadoes confirmed.

According to the Fujita scale an F5 tornado hit central Xenia at 4:40 PM. Winds were clocked at 300 mph, damaging over 3400 homes, 9 schools, 9 churches, and 159 business. Over one thousand individuals were injured and thirty-four people lost their lives, including two National Guardsmen who died in a fire three days after the tornado hit.
