Easy to Maintain. Blackbellies are hair sheep and need no shearing. They grow a long winter coat of hair with a very fine undercoat of wool of varying thickness. The undercoat sheds first and is held by the long guard hairs until the sheep rubs both fibers off in clumps.
These Barbados Blackbelly sheep are in the process of shedding of their short but insulative winter coat. The breed was worth saving for its many practical advantages, especially for part-time growers with limited time for chores.
Corsican Sheep Hunting. 6S River Ranch offers all Corsican sheep hybrids, including Black Hawaiian, Painted Desert, American Blackbelly, Desert Sand, and Corsican Barbado rams. Ox Ranch is fortunate to have some of the largest Corsican herds in the country and is frequently harvesting record-breaking rams.
We currently have access to a few rare Trophy Corsican Sheep or Texas Barbado as we call them, with varied horn directions and size including Black Hawaiian Sheep, Texas Dall Sheep and Painted Desert Sheep.
While many sheep breeds are raised in the Caribbean, the Barbados Blackbelly is probably the most populous. Other breeds include the (Cuban) Pelibüey, West African, and St. Croix. In Barbados, the island where the Barbados Blackbelly evolved, probably from sheep brought over on slave ships, the breed is truly a “national treasure.”.

Well suited to their desert environment, the Barbary Sheep has a light, reddish-brown coat that blends well with the sandy rocks of the desert mountains. The most distinguishing feature of the Barbary Sheep is the long, bushy tuft of hair that covers their neck and chest, sometimes covering a portion of the legs as well.
