This was the result of three years of secret negotiations between the airline and the Soviet authorities. The US Department of State reluctantly chose not to block the plan for fear of a negative response from the Soviets.

The flight crashed into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Los Angeles. There were problems with control of the aircraft - the horizontal stabilizer had jammed. September11. New York, USA.
