OpenStreetMap represents physical features on the ground (e.g., roads or buildings) using tags attached to its basic data structures (its nodes, ways, and relations). Each tag describes a geographic attribute of the feature being shown by that specific node, way or relation.

Alternatively, try the service at http://maposmatic.org/ which allows you to generate and then print a traditional paper map for an area. You can export an image of any area in OpenStreetMap using the Exporter service. This allows you to control the area included in your image and the zoom level.
