data format in the OSM project. This document describes a mapping from OSM data formats to the usual GIS formats to make the OSM data accessible to more people. The mapping from OSM data to other formats is not an exact science. OSM rules on how to map certain features are often not well defined and there is no mandatory quality control.
OSM users aim to achieve this goal by gathering geographic data from government open data portals, GPS devices, digitizing aerial imagery or using paper maps. This tutorial will involve searching and extracting three amenity types (restaurants, hospitals, schools).
OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a prime example of this approach and has brought free access to a wealth of geographic information —for many parts of the world, for the first time.
Thousands of tools have been developed to work with OSM data, for map visualisation, routing and analysis – on the web, natively on mobile, or in print. OSM’s open nature means thousands of these tools can be hosted independently, with no need for approval by a central OSM organisation: the tools just download OSM data and work with it.
OSM looks to map ALL visible physical objects such as: points of interest, roads, buildings, transportation systems, land use, social facilities such as health, education, government, law, shops, industry, water systems, sanitation systems, energy systems, environmental features.
