OpenStreetMap represents physical features on the ground (e.g., roads or buildings) using tags attached to its basic data structures (its nodes, ways, and relations). Each tag describes a geographic attribute of the feature being shown by that specific node, way or relation.
While OSM seems ubiquitous nowadays, hardly anybody uses all of OSM. This will be the key takeaway of our post: Everybody uses OpenStreetMap, no one uses the entire OpenStreetMap. OSM data is created by local communities made up of individual mappers so their activity level often dictates the quality of the map. Also, in some regions, open government data is available to mappers for improving OSM.
