1 Οκτ 2022 · OSM is relevant to education in geography, mathematics, ecology, community planning, government and information technology (IT). Some educators use existing OpenStreetMap data in class projects, while others contribute new data to OpenStreetMap.
OpenStreetMap represents physical features on the ground (e.g., roads or buildings) using tags attached to its basic data structures (its nodes, ways, and relations). Each tag describes a geographic attribute of the feature being shown by that specific node, way or relation.
This unit is an introduction to OpenStreetMap. It focuses on how to contribute and edit in OSM. The activities teach students how to head out in their local neighborhoods and map using paper maps as well as GPS units. This unit describes how to edit in OSM's online editor Potlatch, as well as its desktop editor JOSM.
OpenStreetMap can be introduced to students in the classroom integrated into existing lesson plans, through after-school clubs, or as an independent volunteer activity. The most important part is that students have the hands-on opportunity to practice.
But as OSM models get more and more detailed, some local mappers will look for more detailed tags instead (amenity=college, ..) and append more details. Also at some places the school areas might be tagged and not just the school building(s) that might be within this area.
In this session, TeachOSM contributors will share how to connect students to meaningful & impactful projects in OpenStreetMap. Hear from teachers & practitioners on how you can bring OpenStreetMap to schools and students whether you’re an educator or a member of the mapping community.
