DDC assigns each book a number based on its subject matter. Subjects fall into 10 main classes, 100 divisions and 1000 sections creating a three-digit number that can be expanded with an unlimited number of decimal places to capture additional details about the item. Example: 813.54 M37 2007.
The first component of the call number is accomplished using an abbreviated or modified Dewey class number and an author cutter number. This is followed by the locally devised UIUC book number: 850 Italian, Romanian, Rhaeto-Romanic
Call Numbers, the letters and/or numbers placed on the spine of an item, gives you the exact location of the item on the shelf. This is where a call number is located: Fiction Books are shelved with the prefix of F and alphabetically by the first three letters of the authors last name. As an example:
