DDC assigns each book a number based on its subject matter. Subjects fall into 10 main classes, 100 divisions and 1000 sections creating a three-digit number that can be expanded with an unlimited number of decimal places to capture additional details about the item. Example: 813.54 M37 2007.

The call number usually combines subject classification, author information, and sometimes publication details. It’s like the “address” of a book on the shelf.
Call numbers are the numbers you see on the spine and/or covers of the books in the Library and in the online catalog records for our materials. They are used to find and organize books and other materials on the shelves. We use our own Library of Congress classification system for our call numbers.
Call Numbers, the letters and/or numbers placed on the spine of an item, gives you the exact location of the item on the shelf. This is where a call number is located: Fiction Books are shelved with the prefix of F and alphabetically by the first three letters of the authors last name.
